To ensure that the companies included in the index are easily traded, they must demonstrate a certain level of liquidity. This means that there is enough trading volume in the market, allowing investors to buy or sell shares without significantly impacting the share price. The historical performance of the Japanese stock exchange and thus, the Nikkei 225 index, is potentially one of the most interesting talking points with respect to major indexes.

  1. When you purchase an ETF, the process works in a very similar way to that of a conventional equity.
  2. Moreover, the highest record the Nikkei 225 index has been able to set since its 1989 heights was the 24,270 points it hit in December 2018.
  3. With us, you will use CFDs to buy or sell contracts to exchange the price difference of the Japan 225 between the opening and closing position.
  4. As such, you will need to use a third party institution that tracks the Nikkei 225 index themselves.
  5. The Nikkei 225 is the Japanese stock market index that features the most prominent businesses in the Japanese economy.

However, risks include exposure to the Japanese economy’s unique challenges, including its aging population and high public debt levels. Additionally, because of the price-weighted nature of the Nikkei, it can be more volatile than other indices. The Nikkei, like all major indices, is also influenced by global economic events. The global financial crisis of 2008 caused a sharp fall in the Nikkei, reflecting the severe economic downturn that followed.

While the above figures do make nervous reading, it is important to remember that investing is all about timing. Before the economic downturn came to fruition,  in 1989 the Nikkei peaked at 38,916 points. The scary thing is that almost 30 years later, the Nikkei 225 has still not got anywhere close to the all-time highs it experienced in 1989. If you thought the bubbles of the Dot.com boom of the late 1990s or the housing market crash of 2008 were bad, nothing gets close to what Japan experienced. In fact, to give you an idea as to just how artificial the bubble was, in the 15 years prior to 1990, the Nikkei stock index increased by more than 900%. This will include an overview of the Tokyo Stock Exchange itself, as well as a discussion on how an index works.

ETFs are financial instruments that have the capacity to track virtually any asset class. Whether its oil, interest rates, Gold or foreign currency, you’ll find ETFs on the vast majority of major exchanges. In its most basic form, the Nikkei 225, or simply the ‘Nikkei’, is a mechanism that tracks the performance of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. It is important to recognize that because there are now more than 3,500 individual companies listed on the main Tokyo Stock Exchange, the Nikkei instead tracks a limited number of equities.

Firstly, it is important to remember that if you are looking to invest in the performance of the Nikkei 225, it would not make financial sense to do it by backing the individual companies that make the index yourself. In the past ten years, we have been thankful to share so many wonderful stories about Nikkei around the world. What has been just as exciting for us though, is hearing how our project has impacted and connected individuals and organizations. Our global network—the Discover Nikkei Nima-kai community—has connected, and in some cases reconnected, people around the world. It is not possible to directly purchase an index, but there are several exchange-traded funds (ETFs) whose components correlate to the Nikkei.

These policies, which included aggressive monetary easing, fiscal stimulus, and structural reforms, were designed to break Japan out of its decades-long deflationary cycle. The technology sector is well-represented in the Nikkei index, with global giants like Sony and Panasonic as well as other innovative tech companies making up a significant portion of the index. One of the most prominent Nikkei ETFs is that of the Nikkei 225 Exchange Traded Fund offered by Nomura Asset Management. Although the expense ratio is slightly higher at 0.22%, this still provides good value if you prefer the ETF route. The ETF itself operates on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meaning that you have the option of trading it on the open marketplace at your will. For those not familiar with the Yen, that amounts to GBP£270 billion or US$357 billion.

The great thing about the Tokyo Stock Exchange is that it has a number of indexes that allows investors to speculate on the market in its entirety, rather than backing specific companies. Outside of conventional equities, the Tokyo Stock Exchange also lists a number of other financial securities. The redesign, the first major update since 2009, includes new features that make it easier to find stories in your languages.
